Because I really wanted to do something different for my wedding and I'm going for a vintage look, I recently ordered a birdcage veil. I ordered the one from this website http://www.headpieces.com except it does not have the beading type thing at the top (don't worry...I got it at a significant discount otherwise I would've attempted to make it myself!) I was sooo excited about it, but when it came into the shop and I tried it on it wouldn't stay down closer to my face. It kept flying up away from my face and it looks awkward!! Do any of you have tips for working with the fabric (other than to pin the sides to my head)? Also, did any of you wear a birdcage veil for your wedding?? If so, I'd love to see some pictures so I feel less anxiety about wearing this thing. hehe.
Thanks! Confused

I have one that I ordered online - can't remember where - and I wasn't hugely happy with it - but then my seamstress, who is a very stylish woman, told me that I shouldn't be putting on it straight. I put it at an angle and it looked so much better! Much more fashion forward, and a bit edgier, plus more flattering. Maybe the assymetry makes the face look more symmetrical? I'm having someone do my hair on the day, so I took it to my trial and she assured me it would be well anchored.

My question: what about the kiss?! Mine is a little longer than yours.

Good luck!

I just love it. It is exactly what I am looking for. I searched and searched. Searched this veil thread forever to find what I wanted. That picture is exactly what I am looking for. I am going to order it.

Wait I jumped the gun. I went to the website and couldn't find that veil headpeice thing? Where did you get yours from? I am looking for something just like it, but you are right about wearing it to the side....

Any help would be really appreciated

They don't have a lot of their stuff on the website! I actually found the veil at one of their "authorized" retailers. They had one just like it in the store...although the exact one in the picture is a veil with 3 combs in it and the "crown" on top is a separate (and very expensive) piece. I ordered one with only one comb and some tiny crystals around the edging. They also have one with a flower at the side and some feathers. The company also makes some beautiful vintage inspired combs/barrettes that aren't on the website. They do a lot of custom order stuff. Maybe there's a store near your house that carries it?

I owe you my firstborn -- I've been looking for a reasonably-priced birdcage for months! Thanks for posting that vendor - I just ordered one and she says she can get it to me in time for my wedding on the 18th! BWAA!

I am wondering. When you are to kiss your new husband for the ceremony, do you lift up the veil if it covers your lips? Or are they supposed to fall just below your nose?

I am wanting to wear one and detailing logistics.

That was my question too, but I phrased it really badly:

I said:

My question: what about the kiss?! Mine is a little longer than yours.

Of course, I meant my veil was a little longer, but on reading it ... blush ... looks like I was bragging about the length of my kiss ... Rolling Eyes

So I think I'm just going to lift it up - I'm probably going to be taking it off anyway after the ceremony ...

Too funny. Seriously, when I read it I understood that you were talking about the length of the veil. I really want to wear one, but I am heard that they are a pain in the ass. I specifically chose a dress that I would not have to worry about adjusting or feeling uncomfortable in and the same goes for the veil. Maybe I will make one for kicks and ask my man to practise kissing me in it. AAH but then it won't be a surprise when he sees me in it. He is so traditional, he will wonder why I didn't just wear a regular veil. He told me that he has no urge to make our wedding any different from any other wedding we have ever been to. But hey, he's my man and I love him. Sometimes we just don't understand each other.

I am thinking about this WAY too much! We don't even have a date yet. I never thought I would ever worry about stuff like this, usually I am a "we will cross that brige when we get to it" kind of a person.

Even the just-below-your nose ones get in the way. I just plucked mine off and tossed it in the air over my shoulder (think a less extreme graduation-cap toss) for the kiss moment, which worked because it was that giddy OMG! feeling of the ceremony being complete. But in less hysterical moments I would have just genteely plucked it out of my hair and handed it off to the officiant or even dropped it while leaning in for the kiss.

Actually it worked out just dandy for me on the day - it came to just below my nose but when he leaned in for the kiss the little veil just didn't seem to matter ... you can see it here.

Hey girls just popping in to say that I really wanted a birdcage veil but could not afford any that I found online. So anyone looking for a cheap alternative, all I did was attach a piece of netting to a small headband and draped the netting over my face, and attached it in the corners with hot glue. So easy, and so cheap, and it looked great. I will post pics as soon as I get some from the photographer.

One of the local girls on the not just posted pictures today. You can see her birdcage veil (complete with a flower and feathers) here: http://tinyurl.com/pceus (click on "wedding day" and scroll down a bit).

I asked...she got her veil at http://myweddingveil.com but suggested that cheaper ones might be available from a local (houston) vendor: http://www.theposhpetal.com (contact Ann)

I just purchased mine last night via ebay.
It was still inexpensive, AND the seller had 18" netting,(normally it is 9") which was great because I wanted something to go to the back of my head not the middle!
If anyone is interested i will gladly let you know how it is when it arrives!

It was shipped wednesday, and already arrived today! It was very well packaged, not wrinkled at all somehow- Like I said it was a little more than the Georgia Peach site, but that site seemed to have all 9" netting.

It needs to be tweaked a little to fit my head appropriatly, but that would be with any veil- it can go below my nose or below my lips, and still be at the nape of my neck ( I purchased two white gardenias to pin there...)

SO i would recommend her to anyone since my experience was positive!

I just wanted to give another kudo's to georgiepeach.com. I originally had an ivory dress in mind and Amanda from georgiepeach went out of her way to find a vintage ivory gardenia for me. But then it turns out my dress is white! So I emailed her and she told me the veil was in the box but she was willing to switch it all for a white one. It is shipping out today and I'm so excited!

She was very helpful and replied to my emails promptly. She helped me out on comb vs. pin (I have short hair so I went with the pin), and what kind of flower to use for my dress.

I also think that the price is very reasonable. I was at Britex Fabrics on Saturday and looked at all their pretty vintage silk flowers. They ran about $36 dollars for the flower itself. I was able to get the blusher veil and flower for that price!

I'll post a pic when I get it!

Hi,

I've spent more time looking for bird cage veils than anything else I've done for my wedding! For those of you who got a veil from ebay, and from Georgia Peach, can you tell me how they fit? I love the look, but am not wild about too much fabric poofing up at the top of my head. Or does anyone have a suggestion on how to pin it down?

Thank you!

Well, i ordered the blusher, which covers your face but isn't as poofy. So you might want to look into those.

I ordered the larger one as i mentioned and i also bought two gardenia flower clips, so I just gathered the excess material into and underneath the flowers and it works well. Granted I was doing it in my bathroom mirror and Im sure my stylist will do much better when shes doing my hair- but for a hokey trial run it was fine!

I agree with you- I spent SO much of my time looking for the perfect birdcage. I found something wrong with everyone I saw- I was almost ready to spend an extraordinary amount of money just to get the look I want. Luckily I stumbled on a deal before i broke down and did it!

good luck!

Thank you Luna and Dezoroni! I've been in contact with the woman on ebay- she's so nice, so I think I'm going to go with that. That's GREAT to hear about the larger of the two- you should have seen me today with a tape measure measuring all angles of my head- something I'm sure I'm not the only doing Smile Anyway- thank you for your help!

Luna13- did you find the gardenia clips online? I'm looking for a flower and then adding a brooch on top for a bit of sparkle.

I have very short hair, and I only wore a birdcage blusher. I was really concerned about it sticking out on the sides like a lampshade, but we couldn't make any kind of pins or barettes adhere to my thin, fine, short hair (especially on the sides). Finally, two days before the wedding, we came up with a solution-- hair snaps. My mom happened to find some while out shopping for something totally unrelated, and they ended up saving my veil.

I don't have my professional pics back yet, so this is the best I've got:

Yes I did also find the gardenias on ebay! I cannot remember what the sellers name was but I did a search for 'gardenia hair clips' I think?

Erin- from what I can see of your picture , through the womans arm- you looked beautiful!

My wedding was in July...I didn't wear a birdcage veil, but I had a veil made that looked vintage.
http://vi0lentlyhappy.zoto.com/img/30/7355083102d5c587768c045127c15377-.jpg
It was simple...my mom or I probably could have made it ourselves instead of getting ripped off!! It was just a silk bow that was pinned to my hair and the veil was attached with velcro so that I could remove it and wear the bow like a little hat! It was very cute!

Bjork Girl,

What a beautiful veil! Wow! I bet it looked fantastic! I love your dress too, and the way your necklace works so well with the black polka dots!

Great idea about the velcro! I'm getting a bird cage, so won't need the velcro, but will be sure to pass that idea on to any of my friends. My friends who have gotton married, have all complained about how their head felt yanked each time they got a hug! Again, FANTASTIC idea!

So... I love the look of the birdcage, but really do wonder about the logistics. Does your new hubby kiss you through the veil (seems not so ideal), or does he lift it up, put it back down (crooked, probably, no?), what!?!? And what about at the reception? I don't think I want it in front of my face through the whole party, but I also don't want to have to worry about a whole different look/hair situation. Help! Some feedback from someone's who's worn one (beyond just trying it out) during THE event would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I bought my birdcage off of ebay- the store is Something Bold. It comes with instructions- I got the larger one- 18". I'm going to wear it tucked into the side, just behind my ear, it doesn't go past my chin, so when it's time to kiss, all we have to do, just push it up- so lightly- it won't alter the look.

I saw one photo of a bride who had it placed in the back of her head, at the top of a bun, so durning the reception, she pulled it back and it covered the bun- it looked beautiful!

I'm going to take it off for the recpetion, and let my hair down- so I'll have 2 looks for the day.

Hope that helps! I'll post photos- but it won't be until th end of March.

Great Choice ( if I do say so myself-haha)
I also like the choice of a larger birdcage so there are options on how to wear it.
I already brought mine to my stylist on my last appointment and we fiddled with it, she loved it! So at my actual trial appointment, it should be fun.
Im also going with an updo under teh veil for the ceremony, and at the reception its the hair is going down (benefits to having a stylist traveling with you!)
Cant wait for your pictures!

Mine came just past my chin, so my husband just folded the end of it up over my lips for the kiss. It worked just fine, and he didn't even mess up my delicate bobby-pinning job.

After the ceremony, I traded my veil for a DIY headband so I wouldn't have completely naked hair.

Just giving shout out to Georgie Peach. I order a blusher and I had no surprises. It looked exactly as it was in the picture. It was also affordable and I received it three weeks after shipping (I live in Canada so it takes longer).

However, I don't like the way it looks on me. I feel like I just have a net over my face. I understand that this is exactly what it supposed to be, a net over your face. Its funny because I LOVE the way it looks on other people.

I am going to take the net and attach it to a head band or something like Thrifyme so that its not a complete waste of money.

I ordered a blusher from georgiepeach.com also. (i got the website from this thread, thanks for pointing me to them!).

Here is a picture of me trying it on. It's a little too far back, still requires some adjustment.

I love the feathers that it came with! I'm not a huge fan of fake flowers so this was a cool option.

Leoness- I bought mine from Georgie Peach, and I have the same feeling as you. The flower & veil are pretty, but the veil just looks weird. So I think I'm going to somehow double over the veil a few times and put it as a "background" to the white flower, so it looks more like a vintage hat/hair clip then a veil.

I'm on the French Net veil train, too. Although I really want to make my own--has anyone actually looked for French Netting? I can't find it anywhere online. I haven't been able to go to an actual fabric store yet (they're kinda far away), but I was just wondering how tricky it was. I could always order one from Georgie Peach and tweak it, but I'd really like to try it on my own.

chicajones, I don't know about French netting, but I ordered some netting from Judith Millinery supplies: Netting. It's called Russian netting or just "veiling" on this site. I don't know the difference between Russian and French netting, but I LOVE the netting I ordered.

I got two yards of the ivory with chenille dots, two yards of regular ivory, and two yards of the bigger diamond pattern in ivory. All three are beautiful and more than enough for my little mini-veil. The yards are quite narrow, so if you're planning on making a full blusher-style veil or something like that, I don't know how that would work. But the netting is perfect for smaller headpieces (netting just to cover the face). I got all of that netting for just under $20 with shipping (I ordered three different kinds because I couldn't decide, and I also want to make some extra headpieces after the wedding to sell).
