I know a lot people do their own make up, I never thought of doing anything else. However, I wanted to get some new stuff, because I don't really wear much beyond concealor/occasional mascara, and I'm really pale.
So we went to Sephora last night, and here's my haul.
http://static.flickr.com/76/176792089_24b072d1c3.jpg

If you click here, it will take you to the flickr photo page where everything is identified with notes.

Summary: I got Bare Minerals powder foundation for the first time, and some of their blush and eyeshadow. I decided on a blend of a few pinkish glosses to coordinate with my dress, and because I'm a lip biter, the saleswoman suggested I stick with just reapplying instead of a lipstick that could cake and get on my teeth.
But then someone online who used to work at Sephora said that Bare Minerals isn't good for weddings because of the reflective nature of the foundation, and it's bound to make me look even more pale. She suggested Stila luminescent foundation, which I found on ebay pretty cheap so I decided to get that to try, too.
I plan on having a practice session by taking photos of myself.

What are you planning on wearing for your wedding day, make up wise? Is it different from your usual?

I think the indies who are choosing not to wear make up are cool. Smile I never feel like that's an option for me because I have such dark circles under my eyes.

ETA: It's pretty funny I put this in "cutting costs" because I spent about $200 dollars on make up over the past few days. Oh, but I love it! When else will I have an excuse?

I wore the dream matte stuff, it's like the mousse.

I would have gone with Bare Minerals, if I had the time and money to go and get it. I've heard nothing but good things on other boards, and having luminescent isn't a bad thing, I don't think. Some people prefer matte, I prefer whatever looks natural.

I basically went with the 2000 calorie mascara, some MAC eye-shadow I had and blush I had. I wore Avon lipstick. I actually didn't buy anything new for the wedding except with fake lashes, but at 5am, I didn't exactly get it on right, so I ripped them off and did my own make-up with the stuff I had.

Here's our pics. (fakey acct)

Edited to add, I don't wear make-up often, but I had the MAC from a purchase a year ago. The only thing I went out and bought was the foundation/mousse because I tend to change color frequently and only usually wear it in the winter when I'm paler than pale. I got something more warmer to even out my skin and to have it coincide with the gradual tanner thing I used on the rest of my body. I think I did ok. Not great, but ok.

I plan on doing my own makeup.

For my face:
La Mer sheer tinted moisturizer SPF18 in Medium
MAC translucent sheer pressed powder
NARS blush duo in orgasm/laguna

For my eyes:
I haven't decided on the color combos but I'll probably use MAC shades and I'll probably do a shimmery-vanilla-pale-gold under the brows and probably a smoky-light-grey-blue shadow on the lids. smudged eyeliner in dark grey and black mascara.

I may or may not add some small fake lashes.

Lips:
Stila's lipglaze in a neutral tone

I use this makeup combination a lot and it's pretty fail-safe for me, so I'm gonna stick to it.

I don't really have product recs b/c I think it all depends on your individual coloring and skin type.

Not sure if you're aware of makeupalley.com but if you need product recs you can spend hours just browsing around productville. They also have a wedding board.

I also like specktra.net for learning techniques. The girls there have amazing tutorials.

Totally OT, but annaphila, I just have to say that your wedding is GORGEOUS! You were a beautiful bride, and I LOVE your dress. Smile

I am planning on doing my own makeup with the assistance of a friend that is really good with makeup application. I will probably go on a little MAC shopping spree--after all, what better excuse will I have? Smile I do know that I want to get the MAC Pro Longwear Lipcolour, because it really WILL last without transferring or really wearing off. I have one and when I use it, I have to use makeup remover to get it off my lips. I think it will definitely last through a wedding with minimal touchups.

I wish I could use something like Bare Minerals, but so many of the mineral foundations have bismuth oxychloride in them, which my skin is really sensitive to. I break out into tiny red, itchy bumps all over my face. I am thinking of trying some of the alternative brands...Aromaleigh has a mineral foundation in tons of colors that is bismuth-free, and I plan on ordering some samples to see looks best. My sister, who will be our photographer, said that the last bride she photographed looked great on film and she was wearing mineral foundation. I guess it's just YMMV.

Papergrafitti, I just read about aromaleigh and the bismuth issue, too. I never heard of it, so far I'm not having any trouble with the Bare Minerals, but it's good to know if it arises. I totally support pre-wedding make-up shopping sprees!
I'm happy with the mineral make up, but I do agree that it's a little shiny. Still need to do the test photos.
I'm still uncertain how much eye make-up I want to wear.
But I do need a new eyelash curler, damn it. I lost the pads for mine, I don't know if I'll be able to buy replacements.
Also, if anyone wants a really natural glow, I LOVE tarte cheek stain. It's best for use over liquid foundations, as it might cake with powder/mineral, but it also looks great on bare skin. It lasts forever, both on your face and in the tube.

Awww, thanks! Its all ebay!!! Razz We did so much on ebay, I can't even believe it. We cut so many corners, but it really didn't look it. My brother is getting married in 2 days, and his wedding is more than twice (almost 3x) what we paid, and I don't think it will look it. Heck, his fiancee's dress is the cost of my entire reception!!! (minus mummers)

ugh, crap, the Stila foundation lightest shade is still too dark for me. I like it, I wish it would work, but I don't want the dreaded facial ring. (If anyone who is just slightly less pale than me (whitewhite) with yellow undertones wants it, i will send it to you if you'll pay shipping) I've been really happy with the mineral make up but I don't want too much reflectiveness. I still need to take those sample photos. hmm, now what?

Can't you avoid the ring by bringing the makeup down your neck? That's what I always do - the sun here in CA is so bad that even with 45 SPF I'm still changing color in the summer.

bootsvalentine, let me know how the sample photos go with the mineral makeup. I am definitely sympathetic towards the lightest shade being too dark in most foundation colors...I am ridiculously pale. Up until not very long ago, I had trouble finding anything that would match me.

annaphila, we are trying to do a lot on eBay as well. Our budget just got smaller, so we're cutting costs whereever we can. I just added up the costs for our invitations today...not the cheapest, but still 1/2 the cost of my dream invitations were I to order them pre-made. My only concern is flowers...they're SO expensive, yet I really have my heart set on fresh ones. I am thinking we'll be going the ProFlowers route.

At least if I go on a makeup shopping spree, I can wear it for more than one day!! Smile

My bouquet cost me $15 with my supermarket discount card!!! lol Dont count out your local supermarket if they have nice flowers in season. It's SO much cheaper than online ordering. /hijack

i did my own. since we had record temperatures that day (broke 100 degrees, egad) i sported some SPF moisturizer, mascara, shimmery gloss, powder. very simple. i'm not much of a makeup girl i guess. not that anyone can tell under a veil anyway. http://www.flickr.com/photos/aspic_love/176078339/in/pool-41 272852@N00/

the impromptu water balloon fight during the reception destroyed the makeup and i had to get some fresh sunscreen, but that's it.

papergraffiti, if you are still interested in mineral makeup: Urth Minerals does not use bismuth oxychloride. I am super pale and I've started using their foundation in F1.

You might want to try this technique bootsvalentine to try to combat the mineral makeup shinyness:

What I do is sprinkle a tiny tiny bit of mineral powder on the palm of my hand and then mix it with a dab of my moisturizer and then apply it wet. I've found this is the best way for me to get it to look even and natural. Once it's set it doesn't have that shiny look as much as when I've attempted to use a brush to apply it.

I also love that mineral makeup has some SPF protection from the zinc oxide. I am allergic to everything and have not been able to find a sunscreen that I don't react to, so this is a great bonus for me.

Thanks for the tip Button! I actually am waiting on a sample kit from Earth Minerals, which I've heard raves about AND is bismuth-free. So, here's hoping. I also purchased Studio Fix from MAC tonight after talking with the makeup artist. She has the same allergy as I do, and has to stay away from some MAC stuff, but hasn't had a problem with the Studio Fix. I LOVE the coverage on it...light but not too light, matte but not too matte. We'll see how it holds up. If I am allergic to it, I can always take it back.

Bootsvalentine, I too am super pale and on top of that i have mild rosacea so it's really hard to find good foundation without the dreaded ring. After reading a recommendation in Real Simple, I tried Almay SmartShade foundation from the drugstore, and it is AMAZING. I use it for my daily regimen, it works great with my white skin and it evens out the red really well, while still being light and fluffy. Not fancy schmancy but i love it.

If, however, you find a good expensive kind for paleness, please post!

[edited because i can't spell schmancy]

I thought you were supposed to stear clear of makeup with SPF because it'll wash you out in pictures. Is this a wedding photography urban myth?

Has anyone tried any of the cheaper versions of the bare minerals? Neutrogena makes one, as does Loreal I believe. Are they as good? I'd love to try bare minerals, but I don't think I can afford to get addicted to it.

Tanda, I use the Physician's formula version mineral pressed powder, and I love it! I have sensitive skin so I bought it for that reason, i didn't know what bare minerals was at the time and found out later that I had the cheap knock-off. It really makes my skin look and feel fabulous, you can really tell the difference between it and the normal stuff. I highly recommend it!

I did my own makeup too. No pictures online yet, though, I'm afraid.

I was pretty confident about it because I wear makeup every day, but I still went to get a free makeover (not a "bridal" makeover) at an Estee Lauder counter (which was a perk of having my registry at a particular store). I said I wanted to know how to accentuate my eyes without using liquid eyeliner (my everyday "sexy" look is Audrey Hepburn-style 50s flicks, but I thought it wouldn't go with my medieval-style wedding dress). She was good and didn't put loads of pressure on me to buy stuff. Straight after the makeover I went to the drugstore next door and bought the closest approximations I could find of the Estee Lauder stuff from the mid-ranges.

It all worked out fine. I wore SPF cream, tinted moisturiser (without SPF), brown eyeliner, sandy eyeshadow, walnut eyeshadow, waterproof mascara (a must-have: I bawled all through my vows, then later on in the speeches), blush and pinky lip gloss. It sounds a lot, and WAS a lot more than I normally wear, but it didn't look too "done", and it didn't take too long to do (good, because I also did my own hair and that took WAY longer than I expected).

Edited because one long paragraph ain't easy on the eye.

Any suggestions for good, inexpensive eyeliner?

I'm a rank beginner at this, so something relatively forgiving would definitely be a plus.

As a part of my batchelorette festivities, we went to Sephora for free makeovers. I ended up spending a ton of money, but came out with some great stuff that I really like (even for daily use).

I really like the bare minerals, but I noticed the shine/luminosity as well, so I just dust my translucent Neutrogena oil-free matte powder over top. It seems to end the shine issue (and it lasts all day...even in the crazy 100 degree heat here in NC).

Another few purchases that I really like are my Vincent Longo lip stain (keeps color on my lips even after the gloss fades), my Sephora lip gloss, and my Clinique pore minimizer and advanced concealer. my Sephora eyeliner (pencil) seems to work pretty well...they've got a bunch of different types and colors for $10 or under.

You could try the false eyelashes. I've thought of doing this, because they wouldn't run if I cried, like mascara. I've heard if you want them to look more natural, go for brown rather than black.

i've read that eyelash glue doesn't hold up well to tears-- not sure if that's true or not, but worth looking into before the day.

if you do try it, go for the individual clump lashes rather than a strip. if you add a few clumps near the outer corner, you get a more natural look.

i've also heard of some perm/extention thing that might be more permanent, but can't remember what it's called!

Don't use a regular eyeliner - get dark grey or brown eyeshadow and a stiff, angled brush like this (there are similar brushes at Target from Sonia Kashuk); wet the brush & use that to apply eyeshadow as liner. This is a lot easier to correct than eyeliner and easier to put on.

Dab a little foundation on your eyelids or use cream eyeshadow - all your eye makeup will stay on better.

You might have better luck with a dual mascara/lash thickener like Maybelline XXL Volume & Length, or check out Sephora's tips. Some makeup counters will apply them for you if you buy them there.

They're not terribly difficult to apply, once you get the hang of it, but the eyelash glue doesn't hold up well when really wet. If you think you'll get teary, false eyelashes are probably not the best option.

Thanks, pucca! I'd tried this years ago with a really soft brush, and gave up when I ended up looking like a losing boxer.

I hadn't realized how important the brush was. This sounds like it will work!

Thanks everyone for your advice on false lashes - I have a feeling i'll be balling my eyes out so it probably isn't a good idea. Eyelash curler and mascara sounds much better!

So, that being said, any recommendations for good waterproof mascara that isn't completely clumpy? or advice on reducing clumps? admittedly, i use the cheap stuff but there's always a few clumps no matter what i do.

someone in the 06 thread tried and liked this: http://www.blincinc.com/

she'd tried almost every other waterproof brand and liked this one best.

personally, i love clinique's naturally glossy mascara in jet black. it's not waterproof, but i've never had a problem with it running when i tear up (normally from allergies more than vows). it won't last when swimming, but otherwise might be worth a try as it's thin and natural looking, but you can build up a million layers to get a dramatic effect.

another tip-- get a heated eyelash curler. i've read several places that you get an amazing curl that really holds. obviously practice before the day, but i can imagine that making almost more of a difference than mascara.
sephora has one for $16, but i'll bet you could find one cheaper!

I've used my blow dryer to heat up my eyelash curler before - I think it has the same effect, but be careful if the handle is made out of metal - that can get pretty hot too!

Sephora's own line of mascara is pretty good too - not waterproof. I like the triple action one - it even makes my pathetic short straight lashes look great!

Edited to fix link.

I am a huge makeup klutz... I really know nothing about... well, anything when it comes to makeup.

I have an uneven complexion, I guess. I've got the redness around the bottom of my nose, on my chin, and between my eyebrows. When the light hits my skin, it doesn't look really smooth. Parts are dry and flakey, parts are oily.

I'm looking for something to even out my skin tone and take away the redness without making the dry parts dryer or the oily parts oilier... and something that doesn't cover my freckles because I quite like them.

Does something like this exist?

exfoliate lightly (with a rice or oatmeal-based scrub - aveeno makes some good ones); use toner on the oily parts (witch hazel is fine); moisturize religiously w/ spf 15+. avoid excessive sun, especially if you're on the pill. if you want to wear makeup, start with a primer or neutralizer pre-foundation. apply lightly and you won't hide your freckles (I'm pretty fond of mine). skip powder, just use a linen/rice blotter on shiny bits.

I was gonna say, just exfoliate and use tinted moisturizer.

I've always been a fan of the egg mask. It provides a weird combination of moisturizing dry skin while neutralizing over-oily skin.

Just crack an egg, beat like you're going to make a scrambled egg. Put on face using your fingers. I recommend doing this just before taking a shower as raw egg might be gross if it gets in your hair/clothes, etc. Leave on for five or ten minutes. Rinse.

So, that being said, any recommendations for good waterproof mascara that isn't completely clumpy? or advice on reducing clumps? admittedly, i use the cheap stuff but there's always a few clumps no matter what i do.

There's one make-up trick my mom taught me to never, ever have clumps. Pull the wand out of the tube of mascara. Scrape off what you can, essentially running the wand length-wise along the inside edge of the tube. Place the business end of the wand on a couple of sheets of toliet paper or a tissue. Fold the paper around it and gently squeeze. Unwrap it, find a clean part of the paper, and do it again. Now apply your mascara like normal.
