Anyone have any inexpensive, probably non-flower, creative centerpiece ideas they want to share?

I heard of one couple labeling and decorating each table for a different place they'd been together--e.g., the Key West table, the NYC table. I think they even coordinated the favors to the table theme.

After all this lurking... Embarassed

Anyway, there are some ideas a little lower on the page that show different fruits centerpieces. Basically just a different big bowl of fruit (maybe with flowers around it) on each table. Then you have the seating arrangements organized with the corresponding fruit. Sorry I don't have the link, but it is worth digging for. (I think i may use the same idea)

I've seen zen rock gardens used. We used books from our collection and scattered fall leaves. Each table had a different theme. They were super cheap and tons of guests still comment on them almost 2 years later.

We did all different centerpieces and table cloths. My friend made the table cloths from vintage looking fabric which I bought at a mill store. For the centerpieces we did:
1. A bowl full of fruit, mini pumpkins and gourds
2. A little chili plant inside a metal terrace like thing
3. A bird house
4. A metal basket full of fruit, mini pumpkins and gourds
I can't remember five and six!
We put little tea lights in these different green glass pieces (some teacups some sorbet glasses) I had and surrounded the centerpieces with those.
We also had some left over Dahlia's from the florist so we popped those on every centerpiece. The centerpieces were all pretty cheap as we bought things like the basket and birdhouse clearance (Target had a bunch of "shabby chic" items that my best friend found for me and we trolled thrift stores) or we used what we had - like vintage looking china bowls. We were married in Sept. so things like apples, pumpkins and gourds were really cheap as well.

So based on a suggestion from one of these CC threads, I've decided to go with buying my own linens (either vintage if I can win some cheap auctions on ebay or the Sam's Club/homemeade variety). I'm hoping for the vintage linens because they will go with our historic home setting. I'd like to go with the look of being in someone's parlor, circa 1920 or so, with each table having different cloths and napkins. So for non-floral centerpieces I was thinking of mixing and matching various items - small, beaded/glass tealight lamps, teacup and saucer sets, old family B&W pictures, potpourri in small bowls, etc. My fear is that it will look like I've just thrown junk from around the house on the tables because I'm too cheap to buy flowers Shocked ! I do have a few things around my house or my parent's house that I could use but the rest would be thrift store/clearance buys. What do you think? I'm starting not to trust my judgement anymore as I'm really having to examine my wedding expectations based on our budget (but that's another thread which I will definately start once I can straighten it out in my head enough to make some sense! Confused ).
thanks so much!

Sounds like a nice idea - and if you're worried about it looking like it's just stuff from around the house, maybe the way you arrange things, or what they are in/on would help. I'm thinking of placing things in baskets or old fashion-y ceramic bowls, or on doileys, pretty handkercheifs, or even thrift shop mirrors. Also, I recently saw on some tv show that linens are something that you can often get for good prices at antique malls. Post pics when you have some things together!

We're getting married at the museum of industry in Baltimore, and want to have sort of an industrial theme. I'm thinking of buying metal paint cans from home depot and then punching holes in the cans in various designs and putting a candle inside. voila a candle can centerpiece. I am a little afraid it might just look a little shabby. (sometimes my crafty ambitions get away from me) I was also thinking maybe potting some type of flower in the can.

I have a degree in English and Topher has a degree in philosophy, so we "named" our tables after our favorite writers/philosophers. I found wonderful quotes that involved marriage, love or friendship from each of the writers/philosophers, and framed it (with 5x7 frames I bought off ebay). People said they really enjoyed going from table to table to read what the other quotes said; it encouraged mingling!

Where are you getting your clip art from? I'd be interested in swapping with you. So far I only have a few from I book I bought off ebay. you can see three samples from my draft invites in the ofoto account.

A friend of mine did a cake for each table as a centerpiece, instead of one big cake. That was pretty nifty. And one of my cousins got a variety of interesting vases from thrift stores, her mom's attic, etc and just put in a few tall willow branches with a few votives on the table. It was simple but unique and pretty.

Rabbit, I got the clipart from a website http://www.retrographix.com/ it's all free and there's several old wedding ad art. We also have a ton of old magazines from my boyfriend's grandma's house, like Life, Popular mechanics, teen magazines. We also find them at flea markets.
Your invitations look great. Are you a graphic designer?

After a trip to Home Depot today we had a new centerpiece idea. I'm very excited. We took various pipes and end pieces (i think they're called "nipples" believe it or not)and made a candle stick keeping with our industrial theme. We're going to try a few different sizes to get the diameter of the pipe opening just right for the diameter of the candles...the tricky part it seems.

I want to say there is something that you can put in candlestick holders if they don't hold the candle snugly. Sadly I can't think of what this item might be.

there's little blobs of soft, sticky way that you can stick in the bottom of a candleholder to hold a candlestick up if it isn't snug...i got some once at michael's (i think) sorry, this isn't the most helpful post, since i don't know what the things are called, or actually where to get them...but they exist

Bowls of cherries as centerpieces! People loved 'em (both the idea and actually eating them). We thought of it a week before the wedding...

In keeping with our retro/rat pack/martini/shag theme, we are using those big novelty martini glasses filled with colored water and those little floating candles shaped like olives. Each table will also have one of those old boomerang ashtrays full of mints or candy.

we used some of our books - Mr. A and I are both writers and named the tables after the author. Each table had a stack of hardback books and i wrapped them in a thick piece of ribbon that matched the bridesmaids dresses and then wrapped that in a thin piece of rafia and tied it on top. (does that make any sense?). Instead of a table number we used quotes so i went to bed bath and beyond and bought 10 frames (about 10 bucks each) and typed up a quote from the author of the table. For instance their was a JD Salinger table and it said:

Salinger Table

It's just like a girl to go ahead and do that
they wind up saying something amazing
and you go falling head over heels in love with them

(okay that isn't the exact quote but it was something like that from cathcher). So the picture frame with the quote was placed on top of the books so it was higher and easy to read and on either side I had two little candles and i tied rafia around the clear candle holders to match the kind on the books.

i have pictures but i dont' know how to put them up here so if you are interested, i can email them to you or something.

I actually saw this in a Martha Stewart magazine (not even a wedding mag!) and we're getting married on the beach, so I thought it was cool. My mom, my aunt and I are going to make them. They're large conch shells with flower arrangements in them...

I can't seem to figure out how to post the pics... but they're cool and pretty inexpensive.

My mom and I raided our house for old smallish planters, tea cups and saucers, vases, bowls, serving dishes, and the like, and we're going to just make up different things for the different tables. I think we're going to have to borrow sutff from people. My only worry with this is that people (for some ridiculous reason) think it's okay to walk away from weddings with a centrepiece souvenir. GAH! I would say something in my speech, but it's not very polite to accuse your guests of being potential thieves...

"Thank you for coming everyone, we're so happy you could share this day with us...and hey, keep your kleptomaniac hands off the centrepieces!"

I can see that going over really well... Rolling Eyes

I would suggest if you don't want to reference it in your speech (though I just came up with an idea below that might work really well in that regard) that you maybe put a nicely worded note on the table or make sure that your friends get the word out, because you're absolutely right, people will walk off with things, thinking they're supposed to. I still remember how my cousin and his wife had to make a TON of phone calls the day after their wedding to get back the hurricane lamp/vases that their florist had LOANED them. People were supposed to take the flowers in the little vase, but not the bigger vase that the little vase was in. I'm not surprised that people were confused, but I really felt bad for my cousin!

Maybe in your speech, you can thank all the people who loaned your their beautiful cups/plates/saucers/whatever to make the place look so pretty and personal, and assure them laughingly, "don't worry, as much as we'd like to keep them, we'll get them all back to you." That way, you're not directly telling people not to steal, but the point gets across!

My mom and I had discussed using pieces of my greatgrandmother's depression glass to serve mints at each table, but we were afraid people might steal them. We might use a couple on the cake table, though, because I don't think it's likely in that case that people would mistake them for "favors."

I hope not anyway... Rolling Eyes

I don't know how "unique" this is, but here's my latest idea: round bowls of clear glass in different colors, heights, shapes filled with ivory round long-lasting floating candles. I will probably put fake autumn leaves with gourds and mini pumpkins around the base of each bowl. I think I will get them from thrift stores/antique shops, etc. and try to keep them roughly the same size.

Is it too much to use fall leaf floating candles instead of the ivory candles?

I have been looking for medium to large round "infinity bowls", but can't find them anywhere on the net! I've tried Illuminations, ebay, many wedding sites...so I gave up and decided an eclectic look is more "us" anyway. But if anyone it.

I used beautiful silver (stainless steel?) candleabras from Bed, Bath and Beyond ($20.00/each) and 15" ivory candles, rose petals and small votives with rose petals glued around the outside. People were snatching up the votives left and right and we played a game to see who would win the candlabras.

We also named our tables after characters from the renaissance like Joan of Ark and Leonardo Da Vinci. We rented some antique silver picture frames and created these hilarious bios for each.

My own approach would be to instruct them to cram it with walnuts, but that's another story.

Chicagozoe, I am doing something similar and am using floating leaf candles. I decided not to do the bowl thing--I got inexpensive flared vases ($1.99 each) from Ikea and am putting stones I gathered this summer from a river in Mendocino and some amber glass stones in the bottom.

Then I'm filling them with water and putting a couple of fall leaf floating candles on top. I'm alternating those with groupings of little ivy bowls full of roses and dahlias and these extremely cute little galvanized pots from Ikea that will hold like one flower. We'll also scatter some votives in between.

Oh, and that makes no sense if you don't know that we're having rectangular long tables, so we're not having traditional centerpieces!

Anyway, I may be biased, but I think the fall leaves would look good with what you're describing. I found it's best to get the floating candles on Ebay--it's WAY cheaper than anything else I saw.

Since we're getting married in the mountains, and our reception site has long tables, I'd like to get some long planters and plant mini evergreen trees in them. Then I'd like to add some rocks, and maybe paint a few of them green so they look 'mossy'.

And at the head table...*dinosaurs!* I'm going to get little toy dinosaurs and stick them in our centerpiece.

Whatever works...

Instead of renting non-white linens, my mom volunteered to make gold table runners. We will cross 2 of these over each round table. I think this will look pretty good, and add some color. The carpeting is dark green, so I don't want to introduce too much dark red (my other color) into the room, or it will look Christmas-y.

Bonus: I can give these away as gifts or re-use the fabric somehow.

I really wanted every table to look different, so I collected different watering cans in the months before the wedding, and I actually collect watering cans IRL, so it fit. Then I put daisies in them. I had candles surrounding the centerpieces in tiny silver buckets, and candle holders made of branches (a friend made those as a wedding gift) and voila. When we were done decorating, we decided there was a little too much empty space, so a friend went out and bought baking sprinkles (the little candy kind in the shape of hearts, flowers, squares, etc.) and we drizzled those around the centerpieces to match the watering can on that table.

There is a photo on ofoto here. Total cost, probably about $15 per table.

Then, for the table #, I bought a flower punch from a craft store, punched it out, and taped it to one of the branch candle thingies.

this isn't totally original but I thought I'd share it since it's cheap and is something you can add to your tables as part of the whole centerpiece package...

anyhow, I'm going to buy these frames and easels at IKEA which are only 1.99 and .99 respectively, then I'm going to paint some of them bright orange, some bright pink (to match with my colors) and put two of them on each table. Each frame will have baby and childhood pics of my fiance and me. Just like the poster above mentioned about having different things on different tables to invite mingling, this can work the same way.

allygirl, I am in love with your book centerpiece idea. and chicagozoe, we are doing that very same thing, making 2 table runners to cross over each table. hoping to find some beautiful bargain fabric somewhere.

I love this centerpiece idea...easy and beautiful...though I'm not sure if we can do it at our wedding, because you can't get fresh cranberries in early Sept., only frozen:

We got lucky. A friend of ours after X-mas last year saw beautiful brass square plates at illuminations for 97% off. The same day we were at Ikea, and they had gold candles $1.00 a piece(not taper, but thick ones...and I think that was the price)...and tea light holders at .50 a piece. OUr centerpieces will be a big gold candle in the middle with 4 yea lights in the corners of the brass plate. Total cost of centerpieces? 12.00. The florist will wrap ivy around them too...so add it up to $15.

Check out after x-mas specials. We saved a TON and they are gorgeous to boot!

Yes, my mom and I plan to look at the after holiday sales for runners or fabric, etc. Cranberries are a cool idea! Would it be possible to use frozen cranberries (if thawed out)? No one would know the difference, methinks.

Gold platters sound good, too. Maybe under the bowls I am using? I bid on 4 clear and amber glass round bowls (all different) on ebay today.

Do you think 11 or 12 inch bowls are too small for round tables of 8 or 10? If they are, I will have to keep adding more and more stuff around them - small votives, maybe.

Instead of a floral arrangement, we are making photo collages from childhood to the present (1 for FH and 1 for me) to put on the guestbook/gift table near the front.

I may decorate a cornucopia for the head table and/or gift table.

FYI - for those with a Frank's Nursery & Crafts nearby - they are going out of business. There's plenty of good stuff left (although I didn't like much in the "wedding aisle").

I'm going to second checking out IKEA for centerpiece ideas. If you want to do something like the picture posted above, they have floating candles (all same size) $1.99 for 25!! Shocked They're available in white or blue.

Had I known about this website when I was planning, I would have loved to use some of this stuff. Well... maybe not since I had to habve candles, which don't "go" well with paper flowers, but they are way cool nonetheless:

I bought a giant peonie on Florabunda after seeing a spread on the elegant bride website of a long table with a whole slew of them. We decided not to go with them, b/c our tables are circular, but I think it would look great on a long rectangular table--- just a word of caution (aside from avoiding candles): the shipping charges are very large. So if you buy, figure the shipping into the cost and see if it's still worth it.

(Also FYI flowers are made in china, for those that are trying to track the source of their purchases.)

And here's a bit of weirdness re: Florabunda... I ordered samples b/c I thought the giant peonies would be perfect for my tables, and mixed in with the flowers was the most humongous, gigundus, disgusting cockroach I've ever seen. Must've come all the way from China, or Florida, or somewhere. I mean, we've got some big bugs here in NY but I've never seen anything like this. I screamed like a maniac when it popped out of the box. (shudder)

Now *that's* a unique centerpiece idea:

Maybe one could do theme tables: scorpions, Madagascar Hissing cockroachs, dung beetles, earwigs, tarantulas...

My FH and I "collect" plants. We have become "crazy plant people" with over three plants in every room of the house. We are thinking of taking cuttings off the plants and putting them on the tables, thus allowing everyone to take home a houseplant (our wedding is next January), or giving us more houseplants!
